Myth 1: Dark skin doesn't need SPF
False. UV radiation damages DNA equally at all skin tones — the melanin advantage delays photoageing but does not prevent it. Critically, UV exposure in Indian Fitzpatrick III–V skin triggers melanogenesis far more aggressively than in lighter skin, causing melasma and PIH. Indian skin cannot self-protect beyond SPF 10–15 equivalent, while Mumbai summer UV index reaches 10–12. Without applied SPF 50+, net UV damage is severe.
