Double Cleansing for Indian Skin: Evidence and Correct Technique

4 min read International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2023) · 240 subjects · Fluorescent residue analysis

Sunscreen application without proper removal is worse than not applying sunscreen: oxidised SPF ingredients remaining on skin overnight generate free radical activity. A 2023 study using fluorescent tagging of sunscreen molecules confirmed that single cleansing leaves 22% of mineral SPF and 31% of chemical SPF residue after washing.

Why oil dissolves oil (and sunscreen)

The "like dissolves like" principle: oil-based cleansers emulsify oil-based residues — sebum, silicone-based SPF, makeup, and pollution-trapped lipids — without disrupting the aqueous barrier layer. Water-based cleansers cannot effectively penetrate oil-based residues regardless of surfactant concentration. The first cleanse with oil removes the fat-soluble load; the second water-based cleanse removes water-soluble residues and the emulsified oil cleanser itself.

The correct double cleanse protocol for India

Step 1 (PM only): Apply oil cleanser or micellar water to dry skin. Massage 60 seconds. Emulsify with a few drops of water. Rinse. Step 2: Apply water-based cleanser (pH 5.0–5.5). Massage 30 seconds. Rinse with cool water. Finish: Pat dry, proceed to actives immediately on damp skin for better absorption. Total time: 3 minutes. Not required in morning — gentle rinse or single water-based cleanse is sufficient.
