5 SPF Myths Destroying Indian Skin Every Day

5 min read Indian Dermatology Online Journal (2024) · Cross-sectional survey of 3,200 Indian women · 22 cities

A 2024 nationwide survey of 3,200 Indian women across 22 cities found that 67% believe darker skin tones do not require sunscreen. This single misconception is responsible for the epidemics of melasma, PIH, and accelerated photoageing in Indian women that overwhelm dermatology clinics.

Myth 1: Dark skin doesn't need SPF

False. UV radiation damages DNA equally at all skin tones — the melanin advantage delays photoageing but does not prevent it. Critically, UV exposure in Indian Fitzpatrick III–V skin triggers melanogenesis far more aggressively than in lighter skin, causing melasma and PIH. Indian skin cannot self-protect beyond SPF 10–15 equivalent, while Mumbai summer UV index reaches 10–12. Without applied SPF 50+, net UV damage is severe.

Myth 2: SPF 15 indoors is enough

UVA penetrates glass. An office with windows exposes skin to 50–70% of outdoor UVA intensity. UVA (unlike UVB) does not burn — you feel nothing but it degrades collagen and stimulates melanin. Minimum indoor SPF recommendation: SPF 30 PA++ during daylight hours at windows. If near windows >2 hours, SPF 50 PA+++ recommended.
